FAQ

Caustic soda reacts with free fatty acids to form soap, which dissolves in the water phase, so a centrifuge or settling stage splits the soapstock out of the oil. It is a chemical reaction followed by a physical separation, and dosing accuracy decides both. Target: FFA below 0.1% standard, below 0.05% premium.

60-80°C. Toward the top of the band the reaction finishes faster, but pushing hot or overdosing forms emulsions the centrifuge cannot split, and an emulsion is the neutralizer’s classic bad day. Dose and temperature are controlled together against your crude oil’s FFA and gum load, and the profile is fixed at commissioning.

Soapstock is acidulated to recover fatty acids as acid oil, sold into soap making and animal feed. It is a by-product with a market, so design storage and acidulation properly instead of treating it as effluent: at 5 to 100 t/day of refining, soapstock volume is significant. The handling package is scoped with the line.

Expect 0.5-1.5% oil dragged out with the soap and wash water beyond the acid content itself. Careful dosing and temperature control hold the low end; sloppy dosing pushes it up fast. At scale this single number moves project economics, so it is tuned on your crude during commissioning rather than assumed.

The monthly service is the centrifuge, because it physically separates soap from oil and its wear shows up as soap carryover into the bleacher. Annually, inspect the tank coating: caustic at 60-80°C is demanding on steel. Those two planned checks are what keep FFA results and oil losses on target.
